Please welcome our new Artist of the Month: Grasshopper Handmade. You will find her beautiful variegated sock yarn here, tomorrow August 1st, enjoy!
Here is our interview with her:
1. What is your name, company name and which city and state are you from?
My name is Elizabeth–or Liz–Kennard and my company name is Grasshopper Handmade. I currently live in Waterford, Michigan, but I grew up in Holly, Michigan.
2. How long have you been dyeing yarn?
About 4 years.
3. How did you get started?
I originally got started dyeing yarn because I wanted to try felting and the most inexpensive yarn I could find for felting only came in an undyed color. So I researched Kool Aid dyeing a bit and away I went. It didn’t take too long before I was just as interested in dyeing as I was in felting.
4. What motivates you?
I come up with ideas for colorways from all sorts of different sources (like books, movies and music) and then it’s hard for me not to make them–so I guess my motivation is to see the colors in reality instead of just in my mind.
5. What is the favorite product you’ve ever made?
My favorite colorway is Annabel Lee–right now anyway. But it seems like every new colorway is my favorite (at least temporarily) when I first come up with it.
6. Do you have any advice for other fiber artists?
I still feel like I should be asking for advice, not giving it, but maybe that’s advice in itself–don’t ever stop asking for help.
7. Are there any designers, fiber artists or any other artist you consider your role model?
There are so many wonderful indie dyers out there right now. I don’t know that I would choose one as a role model, but I do love looking at what other dyers come up with. I especially love Meg Campbell-Crawley of Twisted Fiber Art’s work–her colorways are amazingly beautiful.
