Please welcome Squoosh, our September Artist of the Month. You’ll find her beautiful Merino Sock Watercolors here starting September 1. In the mean time you can have a preview of the colorways available by clicking here. And now you can enjoy our interview with her!
1. What is your name, company name and which city and state are you from?
Hi! My name is Erica and I operate Squoosh. Currently I reside in Columbus, Georgia but have lived all over. Most recently we spent nearly four years in Germany.
2. How long have you been dying yarn?
The first time I dyed yarn was almost exactly four years ago. Professionally I have been since May of last year.
3. How did you get started?
There was a Kool-Aid dye along. I couldn’t find any pure wool at the local yarn store so I bought a wool/acrylic blend and dyed with some blue. Awful stuff! I dyed occasionally with it for awhile until I got fed up with the colors I couldn’t get from the Kool-Aid so I finally switched to acid dyes. That’s when I was completely hooked.
4. What motivates you?
I find inspiration for my colors everywhere: food, fashion, nature and the good old colorwheel.
5. What is the favorite product you’ve ever made?
Whatever just came out of the dyepot! Seriously, I fall in love everytime I dye until the next week. Right now I’m crushing hard on some beautiful colors that I dyed in a bamboo blend. Yum!
6. Do you have any advice for other fiber artists
Advice from me, really? Well, I feel like I’m always learning new things so I guess that is good advice: never stop learning. Love what you do but don’t fall into a rut. Experiment with different color combinations, fibers and techniques. There’s so much to do that it never gets old!
7. Are there any designers, fiber artists or any other artist you consider your role model?
Every single fiber artist out there brings something special. I adore Sundara although I have yet to score any, Funky Carolina for the wonderful and unexpected color combinations and Bonne Marie for her classic yet modern designs.
8. Please share with us a zany or interesting thing about you. It does not have to be fiber related.
This is a hard one! Ok, here’s one. I can NOT live without coffee. I’m not talking about having to have a cup to start my day, but that it is my beverage of choice throughout the day. It’s not uncommon for me to drink two pots a day. It’s 9PM and I’m sipping it right now!
