So in the last post you saw 2 shawls that Donna and I have knit in the last couple months. Now we’re kinda hooked on shawls and want to knit more! We both loved being able to knit a shawl out of one skein of fingering weight yarn, around 450 yds and less. All of us have single skeins of sock yarn that we’d love to knit up in something else than socks, but we don’t always know what to pick.
This is where you come in, we’d like you to tell us of your favorite one skein lace shawl/scarf pattern. I’m sure that you know of patterns that we’ve never heard of, so show us what you know! Share with us all your favorite pattern, (including a link to the pattern or Ravelry pattern if possible) and why you like it so much. You’ll have until May 31 midnight to give us your suggestion in the comments of this post.
We’ll pick at random a winner and the winner will win a skein of Hand Maiden Sea Silk so they can knit their own lace shawl/scarf of their dream!
If you want extra chances to win, you can:
- post about this contest on your blog (make sure to let us know in the comments),
- if you’ve already knit your favorite lace shawl/scarf, add a link in the comments to a picture of the lace shawl/scarf
- tell us about your favorite lace knitting yarn
That’s 4 chances to win a beautiful skein of Sea Silk, good luck!
I can’t wait to see all your suggestions, I really hope to find my next lace project in your comments!

I am afraid that mine is not a rare or unheard of shawl. The one I have found addictive is Ysolda’s Ishbel . I have knit two already and have a third lined up ready to go.
I love Ysolda;s Ishbel too!!!!
1. A great one-skein shawl pattern – Susan Lawrence’s Forest Canopy Shawl. It is a beautiful pattern, the finished edge is very pretty and it’s a pretty simple pattern to follow.
http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/forest-canopy-shawl
2. My favorite pattern is probably Alix’s Prayer shawl
http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/alixs-prayer-shawl
I have made 2 of them already (1 for my mom and 1 for my mother-in-law) and I’m making my 3rd. It’s not a one-skein shawl, but you can make it as big as you want since you start from the top and work down.
3. I like making shawls from sockweight yarn, rather than laceweight yarn – I find it easier to work with. I like using the Socks that Rock (that’s what I’ve used for the 3 prayer shawls I’ve done) but another nice yarn is DIC Smooshy and also Zen Yarn Garden Bamboolicious
I really like this one http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/one-skein-shawl
Not an original name – One Skein Shawl – but I think its really pretty and would be perfect for summer evenings!
I’m not very original, but my first lace project was Swallowtail – I hope to make a second someday!
I’m horrible at choosing favourites, but I think AeRang (http://www.fortheloveofyarn.com/Issues/08Winter/patterns/aerang.shtml) is really pretty – I like it because of the symmetry. I haven’t (yet) knit it, though.
I don’t have the skill right now to make it but I love Anne Hanson’s Lacewing.
http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/lacewing
I don’t know how to link it.
Evelyn Clark’s flower basket shawl is my all time favorite. I have finished two of them. Gave one to a friend, kept one. started a third. so lovely. in sea silk in particular.
I’ve been dying to make the Charlotte’s Web shawl – just have to come up with the right combination of colors!
http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/charlottes-web-shawl
My favorite is Alhambra by Anne Hanson. It’s a quick knit and it is beautiful when knit with lace or fingering weight yarn.
I love all of Anne Hanson’s lace patterns…

My favorite lace yarn is Hand Maiden Sea Silk!
Hi to all my stateside knitting sisters!
violet green is a great uk indie sock and lace yarn dyer.(and other weights to be fair). She has some great patterns on her website which are well worth checking out, and her yarn bases are lovely http.//www.violetgreen.co.uk/ with some really good colours -I particularly like wave cubed stole because of the 3d effect, but she has several eg hexagon shawl which you can knit with any weight of yarn and that one really shows off the colour in hand dyed fingering weight sock yarn-however vibrant or subtle the colours are. Her patterns are good value and you can buy pdf versions on line too!
so cross the pond and see that gradually we are catching up over here!
My favorite, for simplel elegance is Evelyn Clark’s landscape shawl.

I love Meriboo for lace scarves, haven’t done a shawl yet. The scarf I did as a birthday present was simple feather and fan and was gorgeous and so soft.
My favorite is Sivia Harding’s Diamond Fantasy Scarf/Shawl. Excellent pattern with both text and charts, fun to knit and to wear, with or without beads. Here’s mine, knit in fingering weight sock yarn I bought on e-bay long ago: http://www.flickr.com/photos/54959416@N00/?saved=1
I, too, like all of Anne Hansen’s patterns, especially all those
nature-oriented knits like the Fiddlehead fern (www.knitspot.com) and I, too, like Alhambra. My favorite yarns are, of course, handmaiden sea silk and I will also admit being partial to my own Daily Fibers handpainted yarns!
If you are new to knitting lacy things, a great place to start is Amy Singer’s Montego Bay scarf. It’s simple but shows off the Sea Silk beautifully. Here’s a link to mine:
http://www.ravelry.com/projects/luann/montego-bay-scarf
Forest Canopy is a big favorite of mine as well, I’m about to start my second one.
Another vote for Anne Hanson’s Alhambra: http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/alhambra-2.
My favorite lace yarn is Handmaiden Sea Silk and here is a link to the Alhambra that I made in Sea Silk in the Waterfall colorway: http://www.ravelry.com/projects/ElaineAnn/alhambra
Cheers,
Elaine
I love Orlane’s textured shawl (http://www.ravelry.com/projects/Orlane/textured-shawl-recipe). Not very lacy, but a beautiful way to show off beautiful yarn.
I am back to post again . I am currently making the Seascape stole by Keiran Foley from Knitty . It is a very esay pattern to follow and I am really enjoying watching the pattern appear. So this is my second choice after Ishbel.
I haven’t knitted too many shawls yet. However, I have several one-skein shawls in mind. Knitters Magazine had an interesting pattern called Morning Glory: http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/morning-glory. It’s a short capelet that requires 510 yards. Looks wearable over a coat I think. The picture in the magazine doesn’t grab me–a little frilly thing over a summer top. But, I think it would be stunning over a winter coat.
I also posted a link to the contest on my blog. http://pencraftco.wordpress.com/2009/05/29/i-hate-pictureless-posts/
And finally, for my third entry, my favorite lace yarn. I have knitted a number of lace projects, although not so much on the shawl front. I buy a lot of lace yarn, and so far, my favorite has to be Zephyr. With the silk, it has a nice sheen, it knits up nicely, and it shows up patterns well.
I have only recently started to knit lace and have only completed one shawl so far. Since I found it to be pretty and fun to knit, my suggestion would be the Shetland triangle. Here is my finished project:

Oh my, I need that Sea Silk to make another Montego Bay!
Montego Bay is my favorite one skein pattern. I’ve worn mine more than anything else I’ve made and it is a sure bet every time. It can dress up a T-shirt and jean jacket, but is classy enough to wrap around the neckline of a blouse paired with a skirt.
I’ve posted on my blog and included my favorite photo of my Montego Bay, please go over and take a look

Admittedly, Sea Silk has been my favorite lace yarn to work with…but Briar Rose Fibers Grace is right up there.
I’ve not done any lace knitting yet, but this pattern is very attractive and tempting: Lacy Serpentine Scarf
HeartStrings knitting pattern #A62 http://www.heartstringsfiberarts.com/a62.shtm
Admittedly, I’ve got little experience with laceweight yarns, but I think this Lost River Alpaca laceweight (2nd picture) would be hard to beat. http://kitten-with-a-whiplash.blogspot.com/2009/04/under-weather-in-very-best-way.html
I’ve posted to my blog @ http://kitten-with-a-whiplash.blogspot.com
This lovely pattern was designed especially for a particular yarn, and the blog related to the site says that just one skein should be enough to make not only this lovely Ivy Brambles Pure Silk Lacey Scarf Pattern:
http://www.ivybrambles.com/product_info.php?cPath=1039&products_id=13947
but also a pair of gloves or two from the matching pattern(s) also available there. They don’t list the weight or yardage of their skeins however. For a favorite yarn, I’d go with any Lorna’s Laces product.
I hope this isn’t a duplicate, my first attempt seems to have gotten lost. I haven’t knit lace yet, but I find the pattern to be very attractive and tempting: Lacy Serpentine Scarf
HeartStrings knitting pattern #A62

Admittedly I have little exposure to laceweight yarn, but I think it would be hard to beat the Lost River Alpaca Laceweight.
I’ve posted to my blog
[...] has a contest to win a skein of Hand Maiden Sea Silk on their blog. The contest ends midnight of May [...]
i have never yet knit a shawl, but it is definitely something i want to start doing. hopefully sometime in the near future!
My favorite shawl right now is the Crown Prince Square Shawl from the Knitted Lace of Estonia book.
http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/crown-prince-square-shawl
I think it’s totally breathtaking and I’d love to get up the courage to cast on for it.
My absolute favorite lace yarn is JaggerSpun Zephyr Wool-Silk 2/18. I love the stitch definition and the feel of it in my hands.
I’m a new knitter, so I don’t have much experience with lace knitting, but two of my favorite patterns are the Ishbel shawl (http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/ishbel) and the Montego Bay scarf (http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/montego-bay-scarf). I’ve had so much fun with those two patterns, I’m planning to make a Shetland Triangle (http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/shetland-triangle) next!
