Liberty must at all hazards be supported. We have a right to it, derived from our Maker. But if we had not, our fathers have earned and bought it for us, at the expense of their ease, their estates, their pleasure, and their blood."
--John Adams, A Dissertation on the Canon and Feudal Law, 1765
This serves as a reminder to me of the risks that my ancestors took for the cause of freedom. I am grateful to them and all those men and women who have preserved our precious freedom.

We on this continent should never forget that men first crossed the Atlantic not to find soil for their ploughs but to secure liberty for their souls. ~Robert J. McCracken

I have a hard time explaining why this quote speaks to me, but it is one of my favorites. Every time I hear the National Anthem I tear up.

Take 3:
Thought I had better repost since I could not read and follow directions either!
We hold in our hands, the most precious gift of all: Freedom. The freedom to express our art. Our love. The freedom to be who we want to be. We are not going to give that freedom away and no one shall take it from us!
Diane Frolov and Andrew Schneider, Northern Exposure, Cicely, 1992
This should be our battle cry!
Applies to every American no matter who they are…we have the freedom to be. We should be bold enough to live by these words since others were not as fortunate and gave their lives.

My Favourite...
Is freedom anything else than the right to live as we wish?
Nothing else.

“Those who desire to give up freedom in order to gain security will not have, nor do they deserve, either one.” ~ Benjamin Franklin
I find it ironic that we continue to be faced with the same conflicts throughout hundreds of years. After 9/11, I thought about giving up a little freedom to sleep better at night. Not only would it be impossible to define how much would be ‘a little’, it would be one huge step backward from the sacrifice of those before us. With the right to freedom comes an obligation to preserve it for our children and ensure their future holds all possibilities that freedom represents.

“When liberty is taken away by force it can be restored by force. When it is relinquished voluntarily by default it can never be recovered.”
-Dorothy Thompson

Thompson’s words remind me that the freedom we enjoy today was won through struggle and force. We should celebrate this today and everyday and never take it for granted
